St. Johannis-church

Short facts

The St. Johannis church in Petersdorf dates from the 13th century. Its 64-metre(-high) tower is visible for ships from up to 20 miles away and was therefore also used by ships as a marker in the Belt. The church houses a valuable 15th-century altar shrine and a very old Gotland limestone baptismal font. The 14th-century three-winged altar piece is also considered a major work of Gothic carving and barrel art. In keeping with its height, 64 linden trees surround the church and the adjoining cemetery.
