The lighthouse was erected in 1881 on the north-western corner of the island and served as an orientation and warning light for maritime traffic in the Fehmarn Belt until 2021.
When traffic increased significantly due to the construction site for the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel and more modern technology was required, a second, new lighthouse was built next to the old one.
