The "Krummsteert" (Low German for "crooked tail") is located at the south-western tip of the island; it is restricted area. It is part of the "Krummsteert - Sulsdorfer Wiek" nature reserve, which covers an area of around 300 hectares, includes parts of the Baltic Sea and encompasses three different ecosystems: a spit-peninsula - the Krummsteert, a shallow-water bay around salt marshes with brackish water ponds, and a dyked former bay.
